Currencies Direct Weekly Market Analysis – Sterling maintains new found strength

Sterling maintains new found strength

August 18th, 2013

Welcome to your weekly market analysis email from Currencies Direct where you can stay one step ahead of your friends on the latest news and reviews of the financial markets. Our aim is to provide you with an easily digestible weekly update of how the financial market is performing using the expertise of your dealers who make it their sole aim to keep on top of the market movements.

GBP

Sterling has managed to retain its new found strength post the MPC meeting and BOE governor Mark Carney announcing a clear strategy to hold interest rates until unemployment gets to a level under the 7% barrier. However, markets have failed to be convinced by those signals as they expect a rate rise earlier than the Bank’s forecast of late 2016, implying that rates would have to increase sooner based on the consistently positive data that has come out this month. A slight pullback seems to be likely next week from current levels as the pound seems to have topped out on its recent run coupled with the lack of economic data to back it up as we move into next week.

USD

The data flow from the US continues to point to September tapering by the Federal Reserve, after retail sales and jobless claims show an economy grinding out a recovery and crucially not creating very much inflation in doing so. The Fed’s dual mandate intact, gradual withdrawal of the asset purchase scheme will probably be met with howls of derision by risk markets and may be Dollar positive in over the next quarter as stimulus is gradually taken away in Q4. Next week should a quiet one for the Dollar unless taper talk sparks major sell-off in risk assets. The annual Jackson Hole meeting of central bankers has been the platform the Fed used to launch successive QE programs; any announcements emanating from the conference are likely to impact the Dollar over the coming week.

EUR

It has been a good data week for the Eurozone too with confirmation that it has officially exited a recession. Germany and France were the main drivers of Eurozone growth in the second quarter with the periphery still struggling. Inflation in the Eurozone remained unchanged at 1.6% and the Eurozone recorder a trade surplus of 16.9 billion in June. The better numbers failed to follow through into Euro strength until a rally at the end of the week. Next week we have Euro PMI’s in both manufacturing and services and consumer confidence to look out for.

Spanish Property Insight August 13 2013

I have just read Mark Stücklins excellent article “Too many homes in the wrong place, too much red tape” (http://www.spanishpropertyinsight.com/2013/08/13/too-many-homes-in-the-wrong-place-too-much-red-tape/) which sums up what has happened and what is happening in the Spanish Property market.  He says that Spain’s real estate problem “is not so much a glut as too many homes in the wrong place” and “not enough for sale where people want them”.

If you had watched the recent Top Gear episode where Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May,  drive the McLaren Mp4-12c Spider, Ferrari 458 Spider and Audi R8 Spyder from Gibraltar through Spain, you would have seen evidence of some of “the glut”.  Large developments on the outskirts of Spanish cities or large towns that are like “ghost towns” and which you cant imagine anyone ever wanting to live there.

These developments were bought by greedy developers and financed by thoughtless banks happy to lend to anyone without considering the consequences.  If they had been made to build better quality and well designed properties in the better locations then the country’s overall situation would be much healthier.

To support Mark Stücklin’s statement that “there are not enough for sale where people want them”, we have witnessed a surge in activity of people wanting to buy property in the La Duquesa, Manilva, Sabinillas and Casares areas.  The problem we are facing is that we are running out of properties to sell.  The only reason why some of the properties we have listed are not selling is simply because the vendors cannot lower the selling price down to the current market values.

The area Barrington Homes covers is only a 20 minute drive from Marbella, the area Mark mentions that will sell. Because our area is not as well known as Marbella many people start their property search in the Marbella Municipality and end up buying in the Manilva or Casares Municipalities as they discover and fall in love with the place and can buy a property at a fraction of the price.

Barrington Homes have a large number of clients coming to look at property with a view to buy over the next couple of months.  If you are considering selling your property please contact Damian or Claire on +34 952936216 .

If you are thinking of buying a property in Spain and would like to know more about our wonderful area, please email me at lucy@barringtonhomes.eu and I will send you the guide I have written about this beautiful area.

Sotogrande celebrates its 50th anniversary

Last week numerous spanish celebrities flocked to the celebration of the 50th anniversary of Andalucia’s most up-market urbanization – Sotogrande.  The event was held at Sotogrande’s exclusive beach club “El Cucuracho” which is situated at the foot of the Mediterranean sea with views of Gibraltar and El Puerto Deportivo de Sotogrande.

El Puerto Deportivo Sotogrande

Over the last 50 years Sotogrande has developed into an extremely popular up-market residential development with facilities to cater for the rich and famous and even royalty.  It has a port, canal system giving access to apartments so that you can harbour your boat outside your apartment, beach clubs, top class hotels, golf clubs (including Europes no. 1 golf course Valderrama) and tennis clubs and polo clubs.

Sotogrande is located in the municipality of San Roque in Cadiz province and is Manilva’s neighbour.  From the borders of Manilva municipality there are wonderful views over Sotogrande to Gibraltar.

From Manilva border to Sotogrande and Gibraltar

If you are staying in the Manilva area, Sotogrande is well worth a visit to have lunch in the marina and to take a look at the beautiful large villas on the palm tree lined streets.  In August it is polo season and the matches are an exciting spectacle to watch.  Entry is normally free except for the grand final.  I will post dates in the next blog.

When I was younger the health and safety laws where I lived didn’t allow you to bump into each other in the bumper cars and you had to “dodgem”.  Not the case here in Manilva and they seem to go faster than ever before.  Be careful you dont get whiplash and keep your hands and legs inside the car!  Fantastic fun though.
