Sailing in Estepona

Filed under: Local Businesses, Local Events & Culture, Sport — Claire @ 6:36 pm

I have recently had to organise a team building event for a friend of mine who was in the Duquesa area for a business meeting. Andalucia and the Costa del Sol have a lot to offer with our miles of coastline, mountain ranges and countryside, so I was at a loss or rather I was confused by the choice on offer and where to begin.

That is when ExperienceBox came to rescue and I don´t regret using the Company for second. Rob, my contact was extremely professional, affable and accommodating and took all the stresses of organising an event from me.

Eventually they chose to do a mini regatta from Estepona sailing club, with a team of 16 having a race in 3 sailing boats along the Estepona shore-line. The day ended with Paella and drinks in the Club Nautico in Estepona. The delegates were all fully insured, photos taken and extremely well looked after by Rob and his team. ExperienceBox organize events from 1 person to huge corporate events so even if you are only looking for a special gift for a loved one, Rob and his team can accommodate you. From Cookery Classes in Andalusia to a day racing cars, learning to apply make up or mixing a cocktail there is something for everybody.

The Three Kings

Filed under: Local Events & Culture — Claire @ 9:57 am

The excitment is building for the the children in Spain and their letters to the 3 Kings will be written and sent over the next few days.

The 3 Kings tradition or Los Tres Reyes, is based around the 3 Wise Men who followed the star to the new King of Kings, baby Jesus and brought gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. The children choose their favourite King to send their letter to, Melchor, Gaspar or Baltsar and  like the UK tradition, it is said that naughty children will only recieve a piece of coal! Somewhat like the UK tradition of Father Christmas, the children will be making sure they have been good boys and girls and will have written their wish list of gifts. The Kings will deliver the gifts on the night of the 5th January when the each child leaves some food for the Kings and a drink for the camels and a shoe by the door where their gifts will be left. The day of celebration will be the 6th of January which is a bank Holiday here in Spain, and families will gather together for a meal of celebration.

One of the highlights of this celebration is the calvacade of the 3 Kings on the evening of the 5th January. In towns throughout Spain the children will take to the streets to have sweets thrown for them by the 3 Kings.  This spectacle usually consists of 3 floats, each one carrying a King and his entourage; around the floats will be musicians and dancers and, as the cavalcade winds throughout the the streets the madness ensues with tons of sweets being thrown at the children (and adults) to collect.

The cavalcade for the Duquesa area usually starts in Castillo at approximately 5.30 pm, before moving to Sabinillas and ending the journey in Manilva town at about 8.30 pm.

Remember to take a bag for all the sweets you will collect!!

Happy Kings!!

Sunday Market in Sabinillas

Filed under: Local Events & Culture, News — Claire @ 11:02 am

I am sure that the local businesses had a collective sigh of relief when the Manilva townhall made recent announcements about the very popular Sunday market in Sabinillas

A few years ago the Sabinillas Sunday market was held on the Paseo in the town and was a hub of activity and a great source of income for the local bars and restaurants. It was then moved to the fairground area and was a great loss for these local businesses and the town of Sabinillas.
As of yesterday, Sunday 4th December and for a trial period up until May 27th 2012, 50 stalls will be relocated to the Sabinillas Paseo, in front of the La Noria development and the remaining stalls will retain their position at the Fairground. The sun was shining yesterday and I hope that the move was a huge success for all involved.

Barrington Homes and holidays have properties in La Noria for sale and rent.

Bank Holidays

Filed under: Local Events & Culture, News, Spanish Culture — Claire @ 10:49 am

Believe it or not it is only 40 days to Christmas and thoughts are turning to the seasonal festivities.

December not only brings us Christmas but in our local area of Manilva and throughout Spain, it also brings 2 extra bank holidays to those of us living and working in Spain and for those with children in Spanish school.

December the 6th is the first, this year falling on a Tuesday and it is a national holiday celebrating the day that Spain became a democracy following the 1978 referendum. Dia de la Constitution is the start of the December holidays and Christmas celebrations and is often taken as a long weekend by combining the Inmaculada concepcion 2 days later.

The feast of the Immaculate conception falls 2 days later on the 8th December and the holiday is based on the Catholic dogma that the Virgin Mary’s pregnancy was an immaculate conception and is typically a day of additional church services.  Be prepared as many Spaniards take advantage of the 2 days public holiday and take the week off, so many businesses and local shops in the Duquesa area may be closed or with reduced opening hours.

Barrington Homes will be open as usual apart from  Tuesday 6th December and Thursday 8th December.

Halloween in Manilva

Filed under: Local Events & Culture — Claire @ 8:13 am

Halloween in Spain

We are all about to celebrate Halloween on Monday 31st October; usually an American and British tradition, the Spanish community in Manilva are embracing the celebration. In Maicandil school in Sabinillas today, the children have been asked to go in fancy dress and some teachers have asked the parents to provide any British items that use for Halloween celebrations!

In Spain the holiday is called Dia de los Muertos (day of the dead) and the day is used to focus on family gatherings to remember and to celebrate the lives of loved ones who have died. The celebration takes place on the 1st and 2nd November and a public holiday is taken on the 1st November, this year falling on a Tuesday. A word of warning for the parents with children in Maicandil school and maybe others in the Manilva area, Monday 31st October is a bridging day and the school will be closed. If you are looking for somewhere to take the rascals there is a fancy dress party being held in Bar Punto de Encuentro in Sabinillas at 5p.m on the 31st; with music, games and prizes. The party for the adults begins at 11p.m with  a prize for the best fancy dress outfit. Thankfully the Spanish children in Manilva and Duquesa don’t seem to have taken “trick or treat”on board but just in-case, stock up with the Halloween party bag of sweets in Sabinillas‘ Mercadona.

Back to School in Manilva

Filed under: Duquesa Information, Lifestyle, Local Events & Culture — Claire @ 9:15 am

Calling all parents in the Duquesa area!! It’s that time of year again that we either love or hate.

The crazy rush to get the children back to school has surprised us all after the lovely, lazy Costa del Sol summer days. School books must be ordered, pens and pencils purchased and uniforms washed and ironed.

For ordering school books and gathering provisions we have a very good shop in Sabinillas on Calle Miguel Delibes, where they are very friendly and helpful and can speak english if required.

For purchasing the official uniforms, Plaza Ginebre  in Sabinillas, just behind our office, is the place to go; an innocuous doorway underneath the stairs will lead you into a  shop and all items of uniform can be purchased there. It is worth stating though that the uniforms are worn on a voluntary basis and they are expensive here in Spain and so personally, I collect my own uniforms from the likes of Marks and Spencers or Carrefor can be equally as good although run out of uniform items very quickly.

For those of us with children in the infant/primary schools Maicandil and San Luis here in Sabinillas and Pablo Picasso in Manilva, Monday the 12th September is the big day.  To help plan your year ahead, click on the word calendar to follow the link to the school calendar for 2012/12 where you will find all of the school holidays.

Manilva Life have a fantastic page on which is lots of information regarding the school system here in the Manilva area so if you are new to the area it will be worth taking a look.

So now back to reality, early mornings, school buses, busy Sunday evenings, pack lunches and homework.  At least the sun shines on us here on the Costa del Sol so the school run is hardly ever a washout!
