Living by the sea is better for your health!

Living by the sea is better for your health!

We already know that living in the countryside is fantastic for your mental health, with green spaces often seen as de-stressing environments that have a positive impact on your wellbeing, but it turns out that living by the sea might be even better still.

Here are four reasons why you may want to move to the coast right now:

Sea air helps you sleep better – “Sea air is good for sleep because it is generally cleaner and fresher air, with higher levels of oxygen, which can improve sleep,” Dr Natasha Bijlani, a consultant psychiatrist at the Priory’s Roehampton Hospital, London.  “The sound of waves can be very soothing to the brain. If you relax, this can help clear the mind, lower stress levels and strengthen your immune system.

The sea helps you relax and distress – The seaside is also often linked to happy holidays for most people, and is associated with feeling relaxed, calm and rested.   As you take in the vastness of the ocean before you, it can also help put things into perspective. Small worries may seem unimportant as you look in awe at the coming waves.

You’re more likely to exercise – Living by the sea is like having your own massive swimming pool, which offers you the chance to exercise for free. You don’t need to join a gym to use pool facilities, but can just head on down to the beach for no cost at all.   Swimming in the sea not only offers a mental break but is great for your physical health too, helping manage weight, decreasing risk of heart disease, and lowering blood pressure.   Swimming is not the only form of exercise that is available by the coast though. You can take part in sailing, surfing, coastal walking, and wildlife watching, and more. The environment can be a great motivator.

Living by the sea is more calming than green spaces – Clearly, living by the sea is more calming than staying in towns and cities. But according to a 2016 study, it’s actually even more calming than green spaces. This is because the sea is all natural and provides a sense of space, openness and fresh air.   Historically, people who have been unwell are often told to have a break or a holiday near the sea to improve their health. These uncrowded places can reduce stress levels.

So if you don’t live by the coast, you could always book that much-deserved seaside holiday to feel the benefits of coastal living.

Feeling a little bit jealous of everyone in Sierra Nevada right now

Filed under: Lifestyle,Sport,Things to do — Barrington Homes @ 11:35 am

I have been looking at the webcams for Sierra Nevada in Granada this morning as my buddies have headed up there for a few days.  Here is the link:  http://sierranevada.es/es/webcams/

Slightly envious, but as I am not able to ski due to my knee surgery I can only look on from the sidelines, instead I can sit and watch, admiring the scenery, watching the children learning – who always seem to have no fear and adapt so quickly.  From what I can see, it looks like lots of powder and approx 70 Kms of skiing area.  Nice!

If you have never ventured further than the beaches and ports of Malaga, you are missing out.  Depending on your driving technique, just 2 -3 hours north is Sierra Nevada in the Provence of Granada.  This mountain range is truly beautiful with the snow at this time of year and the ski station is a brilliant place to learn and experience après ski.

My recommendation is get up that little bit early, say 6.00 and drive to get there for 8.30 – 9  (you will miss the traffic up the mountain road this way).  Hire your gear if you have none and there are plenty of shops who will help you if you are new to this, but remember your ID.  Get straight up to the first station – sometimes there are queues, so best to get through and up and have breakfast there.  Once you have had a little brekkie, head up on to the different areas, depending on your level and enjoy this relaxed chilled out environment.  By about 14.30 you will be ready to come home and ski all the way to the bottom if you have the energy, hand back you gear and head back to Malaga and have dinner by the coast.  Perfect day eh!  Love to hear from anyone who is going there this year and your experiences as I am very very jealous!  Oh and if anyone is brave enough for the night skiing, really interested in hearing of your experiences.

The benefit to individuals living or visiting the area on holiday will be tremendous. Since Sky has ceased to provide terrestrial UK channels the majority of TV is viewed via the internet. This will allow faster downloads of films and programmes as well as a superior quality of live TV channels. Businesses will hope to gain the most benefit allowing them to operate quickly and efficiently resulting in a much more productive and enhanced service for consumers.

Manilva and the Costa del Sol in my opinion is a superb place to raise a family and also for family holidays. At this time of year indoor play centres are a fantastic place to stay warm and have a great time. There are numerous indoor play centres within a 30 minute drive from Duquesa including La Galaxia, Kidz Kingdom and Pequeland are amongst the most popular. Our familys favourite is Hipica Park based in Sotogrande.

Running along the Duquesa & Sabinillas Promenade

Temperatures in October are still at about 25’C. This coupled with bright blue skies and little wind make it the perfect climate to enjoy outdoor pursuits in Duquesa. Today was the day i decided to dust of my running shoes and hit the promenade. Manilva is such a fantastic location to run as the beach and miles of promenade make it the ideal place to either enjoy a long run or to start out on the road to getting fit. With views like these it just makes running even more pleasurable.

Promenade by El Castillo

Duquesa Beach at this time of year is the ultimate place to relax. The beaches are almost deserted, they are immaculately maintained and the sea can be lovely and calm.

My halfway point in my run at the moment is the beautiful El Castillo Castle in El Castillo Village.  This stunning castle in just above the beach and is a popular venue for weddings, art exhibitions and local music and charity events.

This stretch of the promenade is also great to appreciate some of the most luxurious developments in Duquesa including Los Granados and Marina del Castillo. The new campsite of Bella Vista Camping is one of the most prestigious camping sites in the Costa del Sol. This also enjoys a frontline beach location on Duquesa promenade.

Does anyone have any fitness or exercise events they want to promote ? Whats the best running route in Manilva ? I would love to know your thoughts. Leave a comment below.
