Filed under: Lifestyle, Local Businesses, Sport — Claire @ 10:28 am

On the Costa del Sol and in the Duquesa area alone we have many beautiful golf courses to choose from when considering a good walk! Duquesa is a very popular area for holidaying golfers and  now is the peak season, due to the high quality and choice of golf course available and the beautiful weather we experience here during the Autumn and Winter months. From Valderama in Sotogrande to Finca Cortesin in Casares Costa and La Duquesa in-between, we are spoilt for choice.

Casares Costa Golf is a beautiful 9 hole golf course on the Casares Costa, close to Duquesa, Estepona and the world famous Finca Cortesin. The course first opened in January 2008 and is designed by Juan Carlos Martinez. It is a private course with teeing times for visitors and has a practice area comprising of a chipping green, a putting green and bunkers.

The 9 holes consist of 1 par 5, 5 par 4 and 3 par 3 holes.

In the gym there are a range of facilities including a fitness room with a fantastic range of equipment from state of the art machines to free weights and a cardiovascular training area along with a Wellness area and Turkish bath and sauna. The fitness centre also has a fantastic choice of fitness classes available and a beauty room.

The Brasserie is the beautiful restaurant located on the upper level of the Club House and as such has the most stunning terrace area with breath taking views of the Manilva area. Duquesa, a fantastic base for workers in Gibraltar

Filed under: Duquesa Information, Lifestyle, Property — Claire @ 9:35 am

Gibraltar is a British overseas territory located off the south coast of Spain and only approximately 20 km from Duquesa. Gibraltar has historically been an important base for the British Armed Forces and is still the site of a British naval base. However today, Gibraltar has set its sights high and is set to transform itself into a second Monte Carlo. I blogged a while ago about the new airport under construction in Gibraltar and once open this will improve national and international links to the Duquesa  area bringing more tourism and business to our coast.
More and more British and international companies have their operations based in Gibraltar, including banks, accountancy companies and more recently gaming companies. This, coupled with its strategic location has encouraged many people from all over the world to move here but because of the limited space it has made Gibraltar a very exclusive and expensive place to live. Both our long term rental and sales departments have seen an increase in enquiries from clients, working in Gibraltar yet wishing to live in Spain.
The Duquesa area, is the ideal place to live when working in Gibraltar with fantastic road links making the commute just 30 minutes. For families living in Duquesa, Sabinillas or the Casares Costa areas, Gibraltar can be an opportunity to watch a film in English or to do a weekly shop in the hugely popular Morrisons. So whilst we are close enough to Gibraltar to enjoy all of the benefits of working in our own language and for multi national companies, or to relish a dip into Englishness occasionally, those of us who live in the Duquesa area can sit back and bask in the wonderful Mediterranean sunshine in the beautiful and hugely undiscovered Andalusia.

Barrington Homes have some wonderful properties available at fantastic prices in Alcaidesa, just 15 minutes drive form Gibraltar and in an area of outstanding natural beauty, these apartments have been reduced in price by up to 67% and have up to 100% FINANCE offered.

If you are working in Gibraltar and looking for a place to call home, please contact Barrington Homes and we will be very happy to help find your perfect place to live.

Back to School in Manilva

Filed under: Duquesa Information, Lifestyle, Local Events & Culture — Claire @ 9:15 am

Calling all parents in the Duquesa area!! It’s that time of year again that we either love or hate.

The crazy rush to get the children back to school has surprised us all after the lovely, lazy Costa del Sol summer days. School books must be ordered, pens and pencils purchased and uniforms washed and ironed.

For ordering school books and gathering provisions we have a very good shop in Sabinillas on Calle Miguel Delibes, where they are very friendly and helpful and can speak english if required.

For purchasing the official uniforms, Plaza Ginebre  in Sabinillas, just behind our office, is the place to go; an innocuous doorway underneath the stairs will lead you into a  shop and all items of uniform can be purchased there. It is worth stating though that the uniforms are worn on a voluntary basis and they are expensive here in Spain and so personally, I collect my own uniforms from the likes of Marks and Spencers or Carrefor can be equally as good although run out of uniform items very quickly.

For those of us with children in the infant/primary schools Maicandil and San Luis here in Sabinillas and Pablo Picasso in Manilva, Monday the 12th September is the big day.  To help plan your year ahead, click on the word calendar to follow the link to the school calendar for 2012/12 where you will find all of the school holidays.

Manilva Life have a fantastic page on which is lots of information regarding the school system here in the Manilva area so if you are new to the area it will be worth taking a look.

So now back to reality, early mornings, school buses, busy Sunday evenings, pack lunches and homework.  At least the sun shines on us here on the Costa del Sol so the school run is hardly ever a washout!

The anti-smoking law benefits families in the Duquesa Area.

Filed under: Current Affairs, Lifestyle, Local Events & Culture, News — Claire @ 11:06 am

The smoking ban that has recently taken place in Duquesa and the whole of Spain is one of the strictest in Europe. Smoking has been banned in all bars and restaurants in Duquesa, Sabinillas, Manilva and Casares Costa areas and smoking will also be prohibited on television broadcasts, near hospitals or in school playgrounds.

The law tightens anti-smoking restrictions that were introduced in 2006 and came into effect on the 1st January 2011. The anti-smoking rules introduced in 2006 outlawed smoking in the workplace, but let bar and restaurant owners choose whether or not to allow it. Most chose not to impose any ban and only large restaurants and bars were obliged to provide a smoke-free area.

Duquesa, Sabinillas and Spain in general have a strong cafe culture this is one of the joys of being in Spain either as a visitor or resident and I believe that this is a huge step forward for the Duquesa area. The whole of the Manilva and Duquesa area is now far more family friendly and holiday makers, visitors and residents of Duquesa can rest assured that they and their children are in a smoke free environment when they take them out to eat and socialise.

A Very Fat Tradition

Filed under: Lifestyle, Local Events & Culture — Claire @ 9:27 am

As all of us who live in Duquesa know that socialising is a very important part of life here, so much so it even reaches into the realm of lottery. Every year on the 22nd December, Spain hosts the Spanish Christmas Lottery or “Loteria de Navidad”, one of the biggest and oldest lottery prize pools in the world. The lottery’s roots are back in the year 1812 and it offers staggering prizes of up to 2.3 billion euros. The actual draw can take up to 5 hours from start to finish but you will find that it is such a huge part of Spanish culture that the whole country watches every second of it. The main prize draw is called El Gordo (the fat one), this alone has a prize fund of around €500 million which once distributed to the winning number holders can create around 200 millionaires, a very fat prize pool!

Because the lottery tickets are so expensive, around €200, it is usual for whole villages or families to buy a ticket and to share the prize fund amongst them, which makes El Gordo one more of many important social events in the Spanish calendar.  The good news is that the lottery doesn’t have just one winner and thousands of prizes are won each year so I for one will be asking Santa to visit early this year to leave a lucky lottery ticket in my stocking. If Santa isn’t an option for you, the tickets can be bought online and by typing Loteria de Navidad into Google you will find many sites to choose from. Also at this time of year you will find syndicates everywhere from your local bank to your child’s school or alternatively you could start your own syndicate with family and friends?  Fingers crossed everybody and if you are the winner, contact us here at Barrington Homes and we will help you to spend that hard earned lottery win on the Duquesa or manilva property of your dreams.
