Rival countries have a staggering 200 less Blue Flag beaches than Spain. The next challenger being Greece at a mere 407. Andalucia alone has 81 Blue Flag beaches and here in Manilva we are lucky enough to boast over 7km of Blue Flag beaches and the only Municipality in Andalucia that has the Blue Flag trail.

Duquesa Beach improved ready for a busy summer season

Work has commenced to improve the Las Gaviotas Beach, the popular beach just West of Puerto de la Duquesa marina infront of Urb. Marina del Castillo and up to El Castillo village. 4500m3 of imported sand is being distributed to help regenerate this beautiful stretch of the Manilva coastline.

The project is being undertaken between the 28th May and the 3rd June and will leave the beach in a perfect condition for residents and tourists to enjoy. The project is being undertaken at no cost to the Manilva townhall as it is a directive of the ‘El Consistorio y Marinas del Mediterráneo’ to improve the already fantastic Blue Flag beach.

The ‘Blue Trail’ is the name given to the route that links the numerous prestigious Blue Flag beaches in the Manilva municipality. The award is given to recognise the quality, improvement and restoration of the naturally beautiful coastal area.

Lunar Eclipse 25th April 2013 seen from Manilva

Something strange happened to me last night.  Whether it was a cosmic coincidence or something else I am grateful as whatever it was made me suddenly remember that I needed to take a picture of the moon and the stars for my blog – 100 reasons why I love living in Manilva, reason 3 The Sky at Night.

Sometimes I have a wonderful view of the Moon and Saturn from my front terrace but last night it wasn’t there so I went upstairs to my back terrace and was greeted by the sight of what looked like almost a full moon with the top left-hand corner sliced off.

Disappointed that it wasn’t a full moon I decided to NOT take a photo and went back inside!

A minute later my phone beeped with a text message so I went downstairs to see who it was from.  It was from my wonderful friend Katie telling me “Lunar eclipse tonight 22.08” .  I looked at my watch and it was about 22.10 so I rushed back upstairs, grabbed my camera and this is what I managed to take.

Also if anyone has any tips on how to take a better photo of the stars and moon in the sky at night I would appreciate it as you cant see all the stars in the photos  that I could see with my naked eye!

The Sun is Shining in Manilva on the First Day of Spring

Filed under: Lifestyle,Nature,Weather in Spain — Lucy @ 6:15 pm

It is the first day of spring today and the sun is shining again after a period of rain.  The countryside is looking lush and the birds are singing and although its a little windy the temperature is a comfortable 64 degrees Fahrenheit or 18 degrees Centigrade.

The view from Manilva to Casares in Spring

Manilva and Casares in Spring

Spring is my favourite time of year as the days get longer, the temperature gets warmer and the prettiest wild flowers appear all over the countryside.

It is a great time of year to do outdoor activities such as horse-riding, cycling, playing tennis or golf and the best time of year to go for walks or “senderismos” in the countryside as you never know what nature or wildlife you may come across here in Manilva.

There are a number of impressive “senderismos” or hiking trails in the Manilva and Casares area of varying degrees of difficulty and I will write about them in more detail in upcoming blogs.

Have you done any of the hiking routes in Manilva and if so what did you think of them?

Please leave a comment or send me your photos of trails to lucy@barringtonhomes.eu

Its still raining in Manilva but the birds are happy!

Its still raining in Manilva but the birds are happy!

Just thought I would share with you this amazing sight I saw out of my window this afternoon.

The rain may be depressing some people but the birds are certainly grateful.  Does anyone know what type of birds these are and where they are going or have come from?
